The EU-Mercosur Agreement: A Win-Win for Markets to the Detriment of Amazonia?
About this Event
11200 SW 8th St, Miami, FL 33199
The EU and Mercosur are celebrating their latest trade agreement as a win-win, but indigenous and climate activists view it as a major threat to biodiversity, with irreversible risks to Amazonia and the future of the planet. While the agreement claims to operate under a value-based trade agenda that protects labor rights and the environment, Latin American nature defenders warn that it will expand the agribusiness frontier in Amazonia, driving deforestation, land grabs, greenhouse gas emissions and biodiversity loss. Scholar and activist Manuela Picq, alongside directors from the Kimberly Green Latin American & Caribbean Center and the Miami-Florida Jean Monnet Center of Excellence, will discuss the implications of the new EU-Mercosur agreement for Amazonia and nature defenders.
