Abstract:

In the context of the Cauchy problem for the Korteweg-de Vries equation we reformulate the inverse scattering transform (IST) in terms of Hankel operators and demonstrate how deep results from the theory of the latter help to extend the IST far beyond standard assumptions on initial data.
