Michael McDermott, M.D., is a neurosurgeon, chief medical executive, and Irma and Kalman Bass Endowed Chair in Clinical Neuroscience at Baptist Health Miami Neuroscience Institute, as well as chair of the Department of Neurosciences at FIU Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine.

Dr. McDermott is a world-renowned leader in the neurosciences, recognized for advancing neurosurgical techniques and his expertise in meningioma surgery and Gamma Knife radiosurgery. He is one of the world’s leading experts on meningioma — the most common primary brain tumor in adults — and has been identified as the most published author in meningioma research.

Before joining Baptist Health, Dr. McDermott served at the University of California, San Francisco, where he co-directed the Gamma Knife radiosurgery and skull base surgery programs, served as vice chair of clinical programs, and held the Wolfe Family Endowed Professorship in Meningioma Research.

Over his career, Dr. McDermott has authored more than 500 peer-reviewed publications, trained surgeons from around the world, and received numerous awards and visiting professorships. Outside of medicine, he enjoys exploring Florida with his wife, Coralee, and their English bulldogs, Rocco and Bianca. He also has his own wine label and is a vintage Formula Ford race car enthusiast.
