The Threat of Post-Soviet Kleptocracy and What the West Should Do About It

A Conversation with Ilya Zaslavskiy, Free Russia Foundation

Tuesday, November 13, 2018  |  2 PM  |  FIU MMC  |  Graham Center, Room 243

It is often said that Vladimir Putin’s greatest export is corruption. To successfully export it, though, others must be willing to import it. Many would argue that the West must combat this corruption and do a better job of pressing for transparency in international financial transactions, supporting anti-corruption efforts and exposing kleptocracy. Join us for a presentation on the dangers of corruption and how we can confront this threat by Ilya Zaslavskiy, Head of Research at the D.C.-based Free Russia Foundation. After the presentation, Zaslavskiy will join a panel discussion with FIU faculty experts, Professors Tatiana Kostadinova and Manuel Gomez to further explore the topic.

Ilya Zaslavskiy is the head of, a research project exposing kleptocrats from Eurasia in the West. He is also Head of Research at the Washington-based nonprofit Free Russia Foundation and a member of the Advisory Board at the Hudson Institute’s Kleptocracy Initiative, for which he wrote a report “How Non-State Actors Expert Kleptocratic Norms to the West.”

Tatiana Kostadinova is a Professor in the Department of Politics and International Relations at FIU. Her research and teaching interests include political institutions with a special emphasis on electoral systems and reform as well as East European democratic transition.

Manuel A. Gómez is Associate Dean of International and Graduate Studies and Associate Professor of Law at FIU’s College of Law. His research and academic writing focus on topics such as dispute resolution and governance and legal and institutional reform in Latin America.

Moderator: David J. Kramer, Green School Senior Fellow in the Václav Havel Program for Human Rights & Diplomacy, FIU
