TTR: The Power of Artificial Intelligence – Enabling or Disabling Mental Health and Wellbeing

· Presenter: Isabel Alfonsin-Vittoria, Director | Office of Employee Assistance, FIU · SDG Topic Category: SDG3: Good Health & Well-Being

· New York Times Article: go.fiu.edu/ttr1001

· Description: Like the revolutions that preceded it, the Fourth Industrial Revolution has the potential to raise global income levels and improve the quality of life for populations around the world. To date, those who have gained the most from it have been consumers able to afford and access the digital world; technology has made possible new products and services that increase the efficiency and pleasure of our personal lives. Ordering a cab, booking a flight, buying a product, making a payment, listening to music, watching a film, or playing a game—any of these can now be done remotely.

We have become very accustomed to all the ways that AI can simplify and amplify our day to day. We appreciate the convenience factor, the accessibility, and the advantages to doing things faster and better. But is it accurate to say, faster and better? And, if we can get most of what we need from AI, what will that mean to the many people, products, and services that AI tools and programs can replace and provide?

· How will humans remain valuable, relevant, and healthy with the threat of AI assisted tools and programs replacing what was once human enabled?

· What is the proper mindset for humans re: AI? How should we perceive the opportunity that AI brings?

· Can mindfulness help us navigate the future impact that AI can bring to mental health and wellbeing?

Statement of Free Expression

FIU endorses the Florida Board of Governors' Statement of Free Expression to support and encourage full and open discourse and the robust exchange of ideas and perspectives on our campuses. In addition to supporting this legal right, we view this as an integral part of our ability to deliver a high-quality academic experience for our students, engage in meaningful and productive research, and provide valuable public service. This includes fostering civil and open dialogue in support of critical thinking in and out of the classroom, including events hosted by the university.
