Ultra High-Performance Concrete (UHPC) Based Structural Engineering Solutions Workshop
Friday, June 14, 2024 8:30am to 4pm
About this Event
To be determined at registration.
UHPC is an advanced concrete product that has a 28-day comprehensive strength exceeding 20 ksi, with significant tensile strength. UHPC is a durable material that prevents saltwater ingress and is the best approach for protecting structural elements against corrosion. UHPC-based solutions have applicability to both bridges and buildings. Existing deficient concrete columns can be strengthened or retrofitted using additional steel and wrapping them with a thin layer of UHPC. Utilizing UHPC columns in high-rise buildings can result in reducing column and shear wall sizes and increase rentable space. Further, it will reduce the total dead weight, resulting in a lighter foundation. UHPC can be used for seismic retrofitting of existing columns. The unit price of UHPC is higher than conventional concrete. However, the good news is that over the last few years, open-source UHPC has become available with a significantly lower unit cost.
Tentative Topics:
- What is UHPC?
- How to produce open-source UHPC
- Properties of UHPC and protecting structural elements against corrosion using UHPC
- Strengthening deficient concrete columns by wrapping them using UHPC
- Strengthening flexural members using UHPC
- Strengthening Timber Piles using UHPC
- Shotcrete using open-source UHPC
- 3D printing using UHPC
- Design of a 42-story building using UHPC
- Non-destructive approaches to detect corrosion
- Contractors viewpoint and open discussion
Who Should Attend:
UHPC has gained significant popularity in bridge application. However, UHPC application to building construction lags. This is a great opportunity for contractors, consultants and the construction industry in general to learn about UHPC and its future marketability. Details of how to make the open-source UHPC will be presented. Those attending the workshop will later be invited to have hands-on experience and learn how to make open-source UHPC.
Registration:
The workshop is free. Lunch and coffee breaks will be provided. The number of attendees will be limited to 50. Those interested in attending this free workshop should send an email to Dr. Atorod Azizinamini at aazizina@fiu.edu before Friday, May 24, 2024. Because of limited space, an official invitation to attend this free workshop will then be sent out on Wednesday, May 29, 2024. There will be no registration at the door.
Speakers:
Atorod Azizinamini, Ph.D, P.E., FIU
Joseph Colaco, Ph.D, P.E., FIU, Member of the National Academy of Engineering
Larry Griffis, P.E., FIU, Member of the National Academy of Engineering
