Want to read a great book? Want to connect with other students? Join us this semester to discuss Esi Edugyan’s new novel Washington Black. It’s the prize-winning story of George Washington Black, a boy who escapes slavery in 19th-century Barbados and travels the world, growing up to be an artist and scientist. The novel has been called “a daring work of empathy and imagination” and “an inspiring story of freedom and self-discovery.” Our monthly discussions will be led by Gabriel Mayora, an assistant teaching professor in English and Women’s and Gender Studies, and Jason Pearl, an associate professor in English. Simply purchase the book on your own, and attend the meetings. Hope to see you there!

Statement of Free Expression

FIU endorses the Florida Board of Governors' Statement of Free Expression to support and encourage full and open discourse and the robust exchange of ideas and perspectives on our campuses. In addition to supporting this legal right, we view this as an integral part of our ability to deliver a high-quality academic experience for our students, engage in meaningful and productive research, and provide valuable public service. This includes fostering civil and open dialogue in support of critical thinking in and out of the classroom, including events hosted by the university.
