“Social Practice Art: Brown Bag Talks” featuring Mel Day

Friday, March 3 a webcast live at 12pm

Mel Day is an interdisciplinary artist working across a range of media including video, photography, experimental design, participatory and new media projects. Her works typically have multiple iterations as they evolve across multiple years. She is known for her video installations in which the role of doubt and the unknown complicate and illuminate our ideas of truth. Through recent hybrid media work, as revealed through state-of-the art turbulence simulations and collaborations with computational scientist Frank Ham, Day explores the unstable and ungraspable edge of visual intelligibility, the technologically sublime structure of chaos. In the multi-channel video and audio installation Doxology, she shares footage of her family humming the same hymn at decade-long intervals. Since 2010, Day has been generating layered versions of an experimental group study guide that investigates the instability of belief systems of all kinds. The Study Guide invites the viewer to draw on their own experiences and lays groundwork for dialogue among potentially insular groups.
