Join us for a very special volunteer day as we celebrate Earth Day! Our Earth Day activity will focus on expanding our pollinator gardens by planting flowering plants around the perimeter of the Preserve that attract pollinating insects such as butterflies and bees!

Show your Panther Pride at the Preserve!!! The FIU Nature Preserve (NP) provides many opportunities for students and non-students to get involved in various volunteer activities. We have projects and activities for all skill levels; such as but not limited to: tree and brush cutting, invasive species control, plantings, habitat improvements, and nature/ recreation trails maintenance.

All volunteer shifts are 2 hours and include a short tour of the Preserve. If a volunteer or class would like to participate in a volunteer activity that starts or ends at a different time or date an event request form must be submitted 2 weeks prior for approval. This helps to ensure the Naturalist is aware of the special arrangement and can accommodate your request. Individuals who do not make arrangements in advance will not be allowed to interrupt the naturalist due to the logistical and safety risk posed to the work plan and expected participants.

·       Please RSVP at GoGreen.FIU.edu

·       Be on time. The Naturalist has the ability to turn away anyone who arrives more than 10 minutes late. Volunteers are responsible for their own parking (visitors must park/pay at metered spaces).

·       Meet at the east entrance of the Nature Preserve at the Nature Preserve Map sign at the entrance of the trail next to Parkview West.

·       Come prepared. Closed toe shoes required, long pants/ sleeves, hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen are recommended. Volunteers should bring a reusable water bottle and we will provide ice-cold drinking water.

To schedule an internship, or conduct research at FIU’s Nature Preserve or Henington Island contact the Office of University Sustainability at (305) 348-3717, GoGreen.FIU.edu, or GoGreen@fiu.edu

Party for the Planet

Zoo Miami’s Earth Day celebration – Party for the Planet – will be held Saturday and Sunday April 16 and 17, from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.  The Tropical Flowering Tree Society will be hosting its annual plant show and sale.  There will also be fun “green” activities and entertainment for the entire family as well as animal enrichment with recycled items and/or natural materials like newspapers, cardboard tubes, bamboo, old tires, fire hoses, and more.  On Sunday, April 17 the Florida Youth Orchestra will be performing at the Sami Family Amphitheater from 4 p.m. – 5 p.m.

Watch as some of our animals tear into their Earth Day treats. Wild animals spend a large portion of their time searching for and consuming food. Here at the zoo their diets are provided and easily accessible. Therefore, keepers use enrichment like the paper maché items filled with treats, to promote natural foraging behaviors.

11 a.m. – Orangutans and white-cheeked gibbons
11:30 a.m. – Giraffes
12 p.m. –  Flooded Forest Aviary at Amazon and Beyond
1:45 p.m. – Chimpanzees
2 p.m. – Gorillas
3 p.m. – Giant tortoises (Sat.)
3 p.m. – Golden frogs in the Atlantic Forest at Amazon and Beyond (Sun.)
3 p.m. – African elephants

During Party for the Planet, guests can come in free of charge if they turn in a cellphone as part of our ECO-CELL phone recycling program. Not only will each person donating a cellphone enter the zoo for free on these two days, but they will also help save gorillas! Cell phones include coltan, a mineral extracted in the deep forests of Congo in central Africa, home to the world’s endangered lowland gorillas. Fueled by the worldwide cell phone boom, Congo’s out-of-control coltan mining business has in recent years led to a dramatic reduction of animal habitat and the rampant slaughter of great apes for the illegal bush-meat trade. By turning in your cell phone, we can hopefully reduce the need for additional coltan … and help protect the gorillas.

Don’t forget to stop by FIU’s booths!
